Take a look back at features of Joomla from 2.5 to Joomla 4!
Joomla Official has released Joomla 4 Alpha as a testing version, therefore, the stable version is coming closer and closer. Joomla fans are expecting for a wonderful release with many interesting new features and core functionalities of Joomla 4. The development team has taken a long way from Joomla 2.5 till now in order to bring us the best performance and quality. Today article will take you back to a few years ago to have an overlook at how Joomla has evolved!
INSTALLATION PROCESS
It was completely complex when we tried to install Joomla 2.5, then the process has been simplified from Joomla 3, however, UI performance was still not great enough.
Those problems are now solved in Joomla 4. The installation process is simplified more and the interface becomes more eye-catching and user-friendly.
BOOTSTRAP
Bootstrap has been known as a frontend library along with HTML&CSS based responsive design template for typography, forms, navigation, buttons, Javascript extensions and more interface components.
Joomla 2.5 – Twitter Bootstrap
Joomla 3 – Bootstrap 2
In January 2018, Bootstrap 4 released, and Joomla 4 will integrate with Bootstrap 4 to make entire process faster and be more responsive.
PHP REQUIREMENT FOR EACH VERSION
Joomla 2.5 – PHP 5.2.4
Joomla 3 – PHP 5.3
Joomla 4 – PHP 7 must be used.
The requirement of PHP version somehow forecasts a better and more secure performance, as well as many new interesting features of Joomla 4.
Code Standard
Quality of coding of Joomla 4 will be optimized and be much cleaner than it was in Joomla 3 and Joomla 2.5. It is promised to bring us a better performance (the main base is on the core) with stability (some functionalities has been re-written with coding standard).
Frontend template
Joomla 2.5: Beez 3
Joomla 3: with 2 templates
Joomla 4: has 1 new template Cassiopeia (built on Bootstrap 4).
ADMIN BACKEND
The system structure of Joomla 4 admin backend is absolutely revolutionized. It did not perform its best in user-friendliness, so the development team has redesigned it. We definitely can wait for a greater user-friendly interface along with accessibility features.
BACKEND TEMPLATE
Joomla 2.5 – Hathor and default template Bluestork
Joomla 3 – Hathor and ISIS (default template)
Joomla 4 – with a new template Atum developed on Bootstrap 4 and SASS.
The new Joomla version also has changed default template layout so you will see the menu will be on the your left, just like WordPress!
SASS/LESS
Because Bootstrap 4 developed on SASS, SASS is definitely integrated with Joomla 4 (earlier versions of Joomla using LESS). With this change, a better performance is promised!
RESPONSIVENESS
Joomla 2.5 – based on Bootstrap
Joomla 3 – based on Bootstrap 3
These two versions of Joomla had the ultimate responsive which didn’t perform as good as we need. Now in Joomla 4 with frontend template and backend template based on Bootstrap 4, responsiveness will be improved much.
MEDIA MANAGER
Joomla 4 has introduced a new media manager in its Alpha version, with some new features. While Joomla 3 and Joomla 2.5 Media Manager missed a lot of functionalities, the new Media Manager will offer us more features like uploading image by drag&drop, editing image with image edition from the backend with no tools.
MOOTOOLS
It and jQuery Javascript have been introduced since Joomla 3, but Mootools are going to be deleted from the version 4 to reduce code conflicts as well as bring the best performance.
